{"id":525,"date":"2009-06-10T13:23:39","date_gmt":"2009-06-10T17:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/printfinishblog.com\/?p=525"},"modified":"2018-03-24T21:15:38","modified_gmt":"2018-03-25T01:15:38","slug":"controversy-green-printing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/customprintproducts.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/controversy-green-printing\/","title":{"rendered":"The Controversy Over Green Printing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carbon offsetting, you&#8217;ve likely heard of it &#8211; it&#8217;s the practice of mitigating your carbon emissions not through changing your actions, but by paying a fee to a carbon offsetting scheme. For some printers, it&#8217;s a way to distinguish themselves as a green printing company. For others, it&#8217;s a relatively unregulated industry that does little to actually help the environment. <\/p>\n<p>PrintWeek magazine ran an interesting article a couple of weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printweek.com\/InDepth\/news\/914064\/leave\/>Take it Or Leave it, that covered both sides of the argument<\/a>. They spoke to sustainable printers like The Beacon Press (last year&#8217;s PrintWeek Environmental Company of the Year) and critics of the program like Communisis chief executive Steve Vaughan. <\/p>\n<p>On one hand, a sustainable printing company can say to its consumers, &#8220;look, here&#8217;s measurable proof of exactly how I&#8217;m offsetting my carbon emissions as a printer.&#8221; On the other hand,  a printing company could do the same simply by embracing more green printing practices and without creating the pollutants in the first place. <\/p>\n<p>And while carbon offsetting has certainly caught on in the UK, where the government regulates and monitors the offsetting industry, it&#8217;s still very controversial and relatively unregulated in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>So, the question then becomes, should you or shouldn&#8217;t you purchase carbon offsetting credits as a printer? To be honest, I&#8217;m not sure yet. I do know that here at Lloyds of Indiana, we believe the best way to survive is to embrace green printing in your practices and your products. Customers are using it, and if you can start it now, you&#8217;re not behind the wave when it becomes the new standard. <\/p>\n<p>Whether or not carbon offsetting credits will become part of that new standard, only time and U.S. law can tell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Carbon offsetting, you&#8217;ve likely heard of it &#8211;
