Daylight Saves Time & Money?

November 6 is officially the greatest day of the year because as Daylight Saving Time ends, we actually gain an hour -- and who doesn't need more time? Yes, the days are getting shorter and you're probably waking up in darkness (and making your commute in it as well) -- but we gain an hour of sleep on Saturday night as Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 and Standard Time begins.

When do we change our clocks?

Most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.

In the European Union, Summer Time begins and ends at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time (Greenwich Mean Time). It begins the last Sunday in March and ends the last Sunday in October. In the EU, all time zones change at the same moment.

For more infomation about time change click here or go to webexhibits.org.

What is our current time?

Indianapolis, IN (GMT -5:00)

Why do we change our clocks?

There are several reasons for why we change our clocks twice a year, and why we fall back and spring forward. The following is a list of just some of the primary reasons for changing our clocks on a standard basis:

  • Energy Conservation
  • Increased Productivity (daylight utilization)
  • Decreased Crime Rates
  • Higher Voter Turnouts
  • Fewer Automobile Accidents
  • Time Synchronization
  • Traditional Standard of Time Savings

We've made our time change, have you?

Custom Boat Flags add Style

Stylize your Boat!

Ah, Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer. How many of you spent the day on the water with family and friends boating the day away? Fishing, skiing, or gently cruising the open water boating is a summertime tradition for millions of people each year. Boat flags provide a unique way to distinguish your boat from all the others. Utilizing the latest technology means you are no longer limited to the selection at the local marina. You can find companies online that will create a design for you or you can send in your own custom design. Here’s what you need to look for; nylon material for adequate weather resistance, make sure it is printed with UV ink, and then is flag stitched with reinforced hems and grommets. Why UV ink you ask? UV inkjet printers use an ink that is very resistant to fading (FYI red will always fade the fastest no matter what inks are used but some UV inkjet inks last 3 years and more) and when used on nylon flag material you have a waterproof and fade resistant flag.
A family crest, your alma mater’s logo, fraternity or sorority, clubs, a birthday present, or just to have some fun boat flags are a great way to add color and fun to your boating experience! See you on the water!!

Promotional Banner Stands

Banner Stands

One of the best ways to attract attention to your trade show or event space or to simply communicate a message is with banner stands. There is such a broad range of equipment that it is nearly impossible to not find one that fits your promotional needs and budget. In this post we are going to explore different banner stand types.

Here’s a list of different types:
1) Retractable
2) Telescopic
3) Tension Pole
4) Scrolling
5) Outdoor

Retractable and Telescopic banner stands are popular with companies that promote at trade shows and networking events the difference between the two is how the banner is stored. Telescopic displays require that you roll up the banner manually before storing in a bag or case. With Retractables the banner rolls into the body of the stand and the poles come apart so that the body and poles easily fit into a case or bag. This compact nature makes these easy to transport via airplane or UPS and FedEx shipping; each of which is more cost effective than crating and shipping Pop Up displays.

Tension stands use a flexible pole to keep the banner taught during display. They are typically lower in cost due to their simple construction but are not known for durability when frequently assembled and disassembled. Tension stands are popular for displaying a message over a longer period of time and are typically found in hospitals, shopping malls, and airports.

Scrolling stands are as the name implies their construction enable the user to promote more than one message from a single location. These stands require a dedicated power supply and thus are limited to indoor use only. These are also popular for airport and shopping mall use.

Outdoor displays are telescopic or tension pole type stands as these are the easiest to weatherproof. These stands come with a hollow base that the user fills with either sand or water. There are also flag type displays that include a ground stake for anchoring the display. Flag type displays slip the pole onto the anchor so that the display can move with the wind. I will cover these in more detail in another blog posting.

Short term, long term, indoor, or outdoor banner stands are a versatile method for communicating your message. Some even come with options such as literature racks or lighting. Trade shows, networking events, craft fairs, class rooms, lobbies, board rooms, basically anywhere you need to get your message out there is cost effective product available.

Trade Show & Event Planning

We are now midway through January, if you are anything like me you are caught up with e-mails and projects that couldn’t get taken care of due to the holiday’s and end of the year vacations. Now is the time to ensure you are prepared for upcoming trade shows and promotional events. Do you have a hot new product that requires all new graphics for your display system? Perhaps your marketing message has changed? Perhaps you’re thinking about recent activities and you’re not sure if you are getting a good return on investment for all those budgeted promotional dollars. Is your display system getting old and tired and in need of an upgrade? New systems are light weight and cost effective for transport and your staff can set them up them selves instead of paying the high rates for event staff. Banner stands can replace entire back wall systems! Extruded aluminum technology enables users to create contemporary displays that easily incorporate video displays and product spotlights that capture attendee attention.

AND a few statistics regarding event participation and ROI

December 13, 2010 Cold Weather Thoughts

Greetings from snowy Indianapolis, IN! Thankfully we didn’t get hit nearly as bad as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa but we got a decent amount of snow and blustery (my meteorological word of the day) winds to accompany it. While running the snow blower this morning I got to thinking about signage and the cold and snow. Obviously ‘permanent’ signs are constructed of materials that are capable of handling the temperature changes and have been secured to a building or pylon with anchors.

What about the weatherability of outdoor signs? Many people and businesses purchase short term promotional signage because it is an economical method for getting their message out. Windy conditions put stress on any material regardless of the temperature. Cold temperatures however reduce the flexibility of the product thus making it more susceptible to damage or destruction in windy conditions. Obviously any paper or card stock will get wet and come apart relative to its material thickness; i.e. the thicker it is the more moisture it can absorb and the longer it will endure the wind. But don’t count on it lasting too long especially if you are experiencing wind gusts above 10mph. Most promotional materials designed for exterior display have a plastic (very general term but sufficient for this article) component which provides moisture protection and varying amounts of elasticity depending on the product and its thickness. The best bet is to take down your signage until the inclement weather has passed but I realize it doesn’t help you promote your product or service if it is sitting in your back room or garage, but I think the lawyers would be happier now that I’ve said it. Make sure your signs are securely fastened. Double check the tie downs or fasteners used to secure it. If the signage is bigger than 6’ consider providing additional support to the center of the sign. If you are using a vinyl banner I strongly recommend having wind slits cut into the banner. These may not be attractive but they will reduce the stress on your banner.

The long and short of it is to understand the typical weather conditions for the time period you plan on utilizing your outdoor display. Make sure weatherability is one of the topics discussed with your print provider. We know and can recommend materials and equipment designed for outdoor conditions. It is one of the ways we are here to help maximize your promotional dollar.
